OUR RATING: Do It!

Planning a trip abroad, no matter how fun and exciting, can always be a bit stressful and intimidating. So much to see, do, and plan, and usually won a budget and with a time limit! We at Storefront City are always looking to explore as much as possible in the most affordable way possible, and spending our money where it counts the most. So when planning our whistle-stop trip to Amsterdam, it was an absolute no-brainer to go to the I amsterdam Visitor Centre, an amazing guide to the city but also the provider of a magic piece of paper called the “I amsterdam City Card.”

Full disclosure, we were offered the I amsterdam City Card free of charge to aid us in our travels and reviews throughout the city, but to be honest we were considering this card anyway and we will most definitely buy this card next time we visit this beautiful city. Offering free entrance into 70+ museums and attractions in Amsterdam, this handy little card also provides unlimited public transport throughout the city including by tram, bus, and subway, along with a free canal cruise, free bike rental for 24 hours, and many discounts on food and drinks. We were only in Amsterdam for 72 hours, and we had a very specific agenda for what we wanted to see and do, so obviously couldn’t do everything the card allowed, but we’ve done the maths and this is definitely a must-buy if you’re visiting the city for its cultural institutions!

While the card no longer provides entrance to the famous Van Gogh Museum, it does get you into such amazing places as the RijksmuseumMoco Museum, and Rembrandt House Museum, and even further afield in places like HaarlemZaanse Schans, and Volendam if you’d like a day trip from the city. You can buy a card that’s good for 24, 48, 72, 96 or 120 hours, and you can either pick it up from their store in Centraal Station or download a digital version. There’s even an app that helps you book any necessary slots needed for the popular spots and generally aid you in selecting what next adventure to take. Did we mention already that this card is magic?

Final Thoughts: Keep an eye on our blog in the next few weeks as we review the highlights of our Amsterdam trip, almost all aided by this little piece of paper. After a bit of rough arithmetic we reckon we would have saved about €50 each if we had purchased these cards, and we never had any hassle around purchasing different transport cards or worrying about how we were going to get from point A to point B. We also had a few things on our to do list that we didn’t have the chance to get to in the end. To be fair, we also had a lot of places on our to-do list that weren’t included on this card, so if we hadn’t prioritised some of those places we would have been able to choose even more spots included in this service!
