COLAB Theatre’s “The Descent” is an exhilarating and innovative addition to the world of horror productions, breathing new life into the classical Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. This fresh interpretation takes the audience on a thrilling journey, daring them to venture into the heart of the Underworld in a wholly unique fashion. Set in COLAB Bankside’s new location between The Globe Theatre and Borough Market, this contemporary twist on an age-old tale introduces a novel dimension to immersive theatre.
The narrative reimagines the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, blending it with a modern backdrop. Orpheus (Alex Walton), alongside his wife Eurydice, are co-founders of Look Back Industries, a corporation whose research on the human brain focuses on improving mental wellness and one’s perceptions of life experiences. As part of this research, Look Back Industries has also undertaken controversial revivification experiments, which failed a decade ago but are soon brought back to the forefront when Eurydice’s soul is claimed by death and Orpheus must embark on a journey of resurrection. This intriguing premise sets the stage for a heart-pounding adventure, one of which the audience is convinced to take part in as investors in this ground-breaking company.
The production’s multi-layered approach takes the audience on a fall into the depths of a basement laboratory of Look Back Industries. “The Descent” blends immersive theatre with elements of an escape room, offering a dynamic experience. As the audience strives to piece together a life-saving serum from scattered research, they encounter shambling terrors, the dimly lit rooms and chaotic creatures stalking the halls creating an atmosphere of suspense and exhilaration. The use of minimal torchlight further enhances the immersion, making one an active participant in the story rather than a passive observer.
Alex Walton’s commanding presence as Orpheus keeps the group together and guides them through sets that replicate the eerie laboratory setting, as well as the veil between this world and the next. Light effects, including strobing and bioluminescence, and a brilliant eerie soundscape add depth to the experience, heightening the senses in each encounter.
Every room in this dark labyrinth is full of items which may or may not be useful on your quest. Without giving away too much, the production offers an active night, culminating in a mysterious encounter with hellish elements that will captivate you.
After the exhilarating performance comes to an end, the audience is invited afterwards to a bar that evokes the Elysian Fields, creating a delightful contrast to the heart-pounding experience that precedes it. Colab Theatre has skillfully created an immersive environment in their new building from start to finish, allowing audiences to navigate the treacherous depths of the Underworld while still partaking in the beauty that surrounds it.
Final Thoughts: “The Descent” is an absolute must-see for horror enthusiasts and anyone seeking an immersive, adrenaline-pumping adventure that blends storytelling with interactive elements. A fresh and unforgettable take on a classic tale that will keep you on edge from start to finish.
